Problem With the Disney Sequels
Unlike with "Rogue One" the proximity to the original trilogy wasn't a plus for the Disney Sequels. As one of the main points is the main band of characters wasn't in "Rogue One", including Luke, Leia, Han, Chewy, C-3PO, and R2D2. When that film ends all the protagonists are killed. Then moments later after the picture is over the viewer can visualize the start of the original trilogy to begin.
Clearly, there are major problems with ep.7 when we do find Luke alone on a planet for some reason that just doesn't make any sense as the whole reason he is there seems to be pointless as why does he not want to be found when he leaves a map and at the start of ep.7. Luke is said to be a great a hope and must be found, only to be no hope at all in ep.8. The plot is a wild goose chase that has no possible point to it.
Also Rey is the one to go look for him when there is no reason to why she should be the one to go as why these new rebels should trust her and more to the point trust Finn when he started out in the film as one of the bad guys. Often it has been said the idea of a Stormtrooper switching sides wasn’t fully explored as Finn has no problem killing his fellow soldiers that were taken like he was when they were kids. Really that part of the story makes no sense at all and the plot moves quickly and appears to completely forget where Finn came from in the first place.
But moving the plot along always quickly seems the answer when nothing has been done to explain what and why things are happening in the moment. Like how the old gang that was on top of the world in ep.6 is now on the bottom of the heap once again and in some ways far worst then they ever have been before. Given the time lapse Luke should have been able to train Masters and Jedi and it didn’t make logical sense to replay the events of ep.4 over again with Rey starting out to be a Jedi, but not really a Jedi at all.
For some reason there's no talk about the Sith and Jedi. At times there seems to be no connection to ep.6 at all. Not until will get to ep.8 do we get told a little of what's happening as Luke in ep.7 isn't able to say one word, not one word and that is really a sin that Disney played on the fans of the saga to see this after so much time – what a disappointing sight that was and to watch and wait to see the disaster that was ep.8.
There was this disjoined sense between ep.7, ep.8, and ep.9 like Disney was as confused as the fans to what was going to happen next from film to film. It would be strange to know if they did any real thinking about these films at all and this coming from the same company that worked on all the interconnecting films in the Marvel Cinematic Universe. It truly is a wonder how they couldn't get three Star Wars films right when there were over a dozen films in the MCU.
Mostly an unforgivable mistake that got compounded with the passing of each film like a multiple car pile-up accident, yet this was no accident, only pure shortsightedness and neglect on part of the showrunners. Perhaps the damage is so extensive the whole picture cannot be seen from today's view on the world for future Star Wars projects. Surely they aren't looking to call it quite when it looks like they done some major sabotage on what looks like, at one point, to be unbreakable never ending collection of possible stories.
Really the Extended Universe in the Star Wars novels was the way to go and the mess that Disney came up with is insulting. The old gang should have been in a position of strength and not made into the rebels once again. It's understandable that you introduce new characters as that is always the case with new and interesting adventures, but to limit Luke to a moment of screen time is a sick joke and whoever came up with that idea should have been slashed with a cat of nine tails until they passed out from the pain and then slashed again for what had followed. Would Luke really kill his nephew when he risked his life and so much more to save his father?
The story kept hollowing Luke out and then killed him off without a care like they did with Han. Han becomes a deadbeat father who goes back to his old way of life. The whole gang takes a clear win and turns it into a clear lost with nothing to show for it.
Instead of playing chess and not protecting any of your pieces I have the New Republic as strong as can be with guns, ships, and Jedi Masters. Then I would let them have it, not fall like a badly stacked house of cards. From ep.6 to ep.7 something just skips so widely that you cannot pretend to follow any of the song. Pretty much this was a disjointed disservice of characters that had a very long life in the Extended Universe and were replaced with some of the most unnerving, lifeless duds.
At the end of the day if pays that the showrunners understand the product that they are telling and know enough to get it right because when you don't really have the love to tell the story right and rather use it for a piece of social propaganda there's no possible way to show your boundless hate for what was displayed before you took over the project.
